  • Sad to report, we have cancelled our big annual fundraising event, the Wild Wye Swim, due to the extreme conditions and precarious state of the River Wye. We hope the event will return next year.

We have therefore lost our biggest fundraising event of the year. But there are plenty of ways in which you can support SARA, and help us to keep our rescue services operational 24 x 7 x 365. This Saturday we will be at the Gloucester Goes Retro event, with boat rescue demonstrations to watch as well as our collecting buckets.

Then over the next few weeks:
On Sat 3rd and Sun 4th Sept we will be at Morrison’s Ross On Wye
On Sun 11th Sept we’re at at Frampton Country Fayre
On Sat 17th Sept we’re at the Gloucestershire Constabulary Open Day
Plus on Sat 17th and Sun 18th Sept we will be at Morrisons Malvern.
We look forward to seeing you!

The high-speed lifeboat rides on the River Severn are for adults on SARA6, our standby lifeboat, and will last 20 minutes (including boarding and disembarking). These rides must be pre-booked – please call crew member Shaun on 07718-888836 or email him at shaun.egan@sara-rescue.org.uk. Tickets cost £30 per person or £50 for two.

Come along and support the SARA crew at your local lifeboat station! 10am to 5pm, entry and parking are free – although we would welcome your donations!

  • Congratulations to the four SARA team members who qualified today as Rescue 3 Europe Rope Rescue Operator Instructors.

This is all part of our strategy to arrange for our volunteers to become in-house instructors as much as possible, to keep our costs down. In that capacity they join our existing sets of instructors for powerboat and swiftwater rescue training. They will soon be much in demand to deliver rope rescue operator training courses; watch this space!

  • It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our friend and team member Malcolm Bradley on Sunday evening, following a short illness.
Malcolm was a SARA member at Beachley for 10 years, serving as the station medical manager, as a radio operator manning the Operations Room, supporting fundraising events and recently also as a ‘Deputy Launch Authority’ (DLA) responsible for deploying appropriate assets to a callout. He supported many lifeboat operations from the station Operations Room and his friendly voice on the radio or cheery smile in the station was always reassuring. Whatever he was asked, the reply would be ‘Yep, no problem’, and that’s a big part of how we will all remember him. Friendly, helpful, a true gentleman who was proud to be a member of SARA.
Malcolm was a true volunteer, who had served in St Johns Ambulance for 15 years before joining SARA, including as the Team Leader of the Coleford unit, and served as an NHS Community First Responder. He was also a keen music fan, active as a DJ, a radio enthusiast and was devoted to his mother.
We will miss him dearly, as a friend as well as a colleague.
    Stand down C64, stand down.

  • Today SARA has transitioned to being a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (‘Charity CIO’). This is a type of organisation which has been available since 2013 and allows the organisation itself to enter into contracts and hold property, rather than doing it in the names of the Trustees, and gives its members limited liability in the same was as being a limited company does for employees. Many other charities have already made this switch. Nothing is changing about what we do or how we do it, and we remain an organisation which is 100% volunteers. You’ll probably just notice that we have a new Charity Number, 1193634, which we will be using from now on.
We are now looking for suitably high calibre individuals from outside of SARA to join our Board of Trustees. If you would consider using your skills and experience to support voluntary search and rescue services as a SARA Trustee, please contact us on info@sara-rescue.org.uk for a recruitment pack.
