SARA Receives a New Engine for their Lifeboat, SARA 3

SARA attended the tragic accident at Caerleon in December 2001 in which four men were killed when their vehicle skidded off the road and into the river Usk.

Since then, the families and friends of the men have continued to raise money for several local charities, including SARA. So far, the money raised just for SARA is in the region of £4,000.

This was sufficient to replace our ageing Mariner 55HP Engine fitted to SARA 3, our smaller lifeboat. This engine was beginning to prove unreliable.

With the money raised, we have purchased a brand new Yamaha 40HP engine which is much more reliable and more economical to run. In memory of the men that died - Leighton Pring, Matthew Reardon, Martin Biggs and Anthony Hill - SARA has fitted a plaque to the engine in their honour.

All of the crew members at SARA would like to say a big thank you to everyone that contributed towards this donation, which will now mean that we can have greater confidence when putting to sea, in the reliability of our boat and offer a more reliable service.

The families of the men have also pledged to continue to raise funds for SARA in any way they can!

The Story was also covered in the South Wales Argus.
